On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks…

May 12, 2009

Loch Lomond is one of those songs that’s more or less cropped up throughout our lives in one way or the next. Or so it happened for me.

The song itself has a sad and dark past, one that was believed to be written by a Scottish prisoner set for execution.

Emerald Rose said it best when they described the song:

“This next tune you’ve heard before, its an old Scot’s tune, and you’ve heard it many times but you haven’t heard it done right, because most of the time its done like this *jovially singing* ‘ah you tak th’ hoigh road an oil tak th’ low road…’ Well let me tell you what this song’s about because its not like that at all. Its about these two Scottish prisoners in France, and one of them has been set free, he’s going the high road which is the normal way, you know, probably be dropped off in Calais, and stow away aboard a ship and then steal a horse and then ride back to Scotland… the other guy is being executed, and the only way he’s getting back is the low road, the path of the spirit, but it flies nearly instantaneously, that’s why he get’s to Scotland first but he’ll never see his true love again. So its not a drinking song, its a death song…”

EDIT: Recolour update: Blah, lots of issues wrong with the word bubbles but meh, I’ll fix them when it goes to print. enjoy the updated page!
