FAQ

Yay the FAQ… here I answer the many queastions that have popped up in dealing with the comic and its setting.

1: What made you start doing DEVIA?

The right answer is because I went to college as a storyboarder and this seemed like a logical step toward self employment especially after the economy tanked and I was out of a “real” storyboarding job thanks to that. The more complex answer is that DEVIA is based off a forum roleplay that me and my friends have started and it serves as a wonderful stepping stone for new members to read and be able to slowly catch up on our history. In saying that I’ve had to rewrite the original roleplay to actually have a central plot and forshadowing, plot points etc. characters have been re-arranged, replaced, or omitted for the fact that some simply had more of a part to play than others.

2. Is this your first attempt at webcomics?

No… I had one when I was back in College. It had one and a half storylines and it tanked thanks to my overzealous work scedule. Parts of it, im told, still exist on the web but to me, it should just stay dead it was horrible and amaturish.

3. If I ask really nicely can I have your old webcomic sent to me to read via email?

Good god no, not even trying to be mean. It really was horrible and I wouldn’t want anyone asking this to come back later with a lawsuit because they gouged out thier eyes from reading something so atrociously terrible.

4. You really need to work on backgrounds!

Thats not a question… but its been said alot. Yes, I know.. It’s something that I’m always striving to put more time into. Hopefully this will show through a bit more in future pages.

5. Are you a furry?

I think every person who as a comic who features talking animals wether they be all cats or all foxes or all diferent kinds of critters, gets asked this question at least once. No, I am no a furry. I go to “furry” conventions and I participate in the artistic side of the Anthro comunity. But I do not own, nor have any desire to own, a fursuit. I don’t have delusions that I’m an animal trapped in a humans body. If my readers have this going for them, thats fine. But personally I started drawing anthropromorphic animals because Disney basically told me animal people were okay.

6. Why animals if your not a furry?

For me, because I’ve been drawing anthro characters since the days even before watching Disney’s Robin Hood, and they come, artistically, more naturally to me than drawing humans. Its easier and theres a wider range of emotion that can be displayed in ears, tails and other features that would simply be lost if I struggled with the human face.

7. Is the roleplay this was inspired from furry/anthro?

No it is not. Again I turned everyone into animals based on their personalities in the roleplay itself because it was easier for me than to try and draw humans. I already have to contend with uniforms which are a pain in the butt to keep consistant.

8. Why are the character designs inconsistant?

The plauge of doing the comic on a weekly basis is I didnt have the luxury to realize the mistakes I made untill after the page was up and I looked at it again with fresh eyes. This is a problem that will be solved in the future. The print versions have been corrected to the best of my ability before they saw the printing process though.

9.Where and what is Devia?

Devia is a small island chain somewhere in the Caribbean located in one of the corners of the Bermuda triangle. It is fictional and houses an Empire that’s been there since the 1300’s and a fledgling Republic. The island chain itself has become a center of vague interest for the three major world powers, America, Great Britan, and France. All three countries have basically sent their most disposable officers there to keep a presence for their respective countries.

10. Is the comic historically accurate?

Yes and no. Yes in the fact that the uniforms and clothes they are wearing are fairly accurate to the uniforms and clothing worn at the time. No in that the circumstances of Devia basically dwell in the realm of hyper history. Its a fictional island with elements of fantasy and steampunk that will crop up in the future, some elements coming up sooner, or later than others.
